As I drive through the City with our gorgeous Fall colors (and now snow), I’ve shifted into full-out Thanksgiving mode.  As business owners and leaders, we have a lot to be grateful for – things that, because we control our destinies, we can uniquely enjoy.
Yes – there are plenty of days when being the boss is stressful.  Money challenges, people challenges, and what seem like unending demands on your time will always be there.  But think about it – you get to decide the exact impact you want to make in people’s lives and in the world. You have some wonderful relationships with clients, your team, and the Community that would never have happened if you worked for someone else. You get to build your company so it’s uniquely YOU and how you want people to show up. That’s pretty cool.
Science tells us that the more you “stay in gratitude” – actually cultivate a daily habit and rhythm around feeling grateful – the more the stress and fears and fatigues melt away. I do a gratitude journal every morning – 5 things, no repeats.  It helps me to remember the little things that I might otherwise take for granted: the person who waited this morning while I parallel-parked my car in the middle of the Madison Marathon traffic, that my partner brought me a cup of coffee, that I had a fantastic meeting on Friday with a big prospect that was a referral from a colleague.
Here’s your Thanksgiving challenge – pull out this list as you’re having coffee each morning and fill it in. I’ll bet you’ll find yourself starting your day with a smile and energy that others will find contagious.
I am grateful for YOU!  Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
