Time for the last two time-tested keys to unlock your dream team! Here’s how to transform the team that you have, into the team you know they can be.
KEY #5: SUPPORT RISK TAKING
Nothing puts fear in your heart like pushing yourself out of your own nest.
And that’s exactly what you need to do, if you want your team to actually run your business (so you can go do owner-level stuff).
Your team – not you – needs to take care of your customers and run your business. That means you need to let go of a lot of things you are used to doing, and let your team step up.
This is scary because some things are critical to the survival of your business. And your employees won’t do things exactly like you would. They’ll screw stuff up. They might even lose a prospect or piss off a customer. You’re going to want to swoop in and save them.
You can’t.
They need to learn, just like you did.
Remember this: They are just as good as you were at some phase in your career. You made it – they will too.
Give them permission – no, give them the directive – that if you start “getting involved” in something you’ve handed off to them, they are to tell you to butt out. You can be available for support or historical perspective, but you cannot get involved.
Key #6: 100% Involvement and Inclusion
100% Involvement and Inclusion means just that – that your employees are “all in.” They are “all in” for building and realizing your vision. They are “all in” for living and teaching your culture. They are “all in” for supporting their fellow team members. They are “all in” for growing your company and making it profitable.
FUN, IMPACT AND LEARNING are how you and your employees know if they are “all in.”
-
Are they having fun?
-
Are they making an impact?
-
Are they learning?
Anyone who can answer YES to those three questions is probably in the right seat on the right bus.
If they can’t, that’s totally ok. It’s just time to find a different bus to hop on to.
BONUS GAME CHANGER!
Get ready for it… You get the team that you deserve.
Think about that for a second. If you don’t like your team, or if you DO like your team, that’s on you. If your team isn’t performing where you know they could, or if they ARE performing well, that’s on you. If your culture has slipped, or if it’s amazing, that’s on you.
You are the common denominator.
Do the work to become a great leader. Know that there is no finish line – look for opportunities to continually sharpen your saw.
Seeing your team gain confidence and flourish is one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever experience as a leader. Give yourself the gift of stepping back so they can be challenged and grow.
